Color Techniques

To answer this question, we checked with several hair color experts on what they are formulating for their high profile clients.

Cody Ferro, Technical Advisor for Schwarzkopf Professional describes his look for the season:

Moving into the summer, we are seeing a lot of precise yet loose color placement…techniques like Color Melting and Color Contrast. Clients are definitely asking for low maintenance but high impact hair color, and techniques like these deliver both.

In the salon, I work on a wide variety of clients from conservative professionals in D.C. to young college students, both looking to express themselves through their hair color. This season we continue to see a lot of subtle dimensional color. The most popular look is sun-kissed ends. Lightened ends can be adapted to any hair color or age group, and add striking impact. The two techniques I use to achieve this are Color Melting and my signature Color Contrast.

Color Melting uses two or more colors in a given section. The idea is to create a beautiful blended effect, similar to marble or wood grain. Colors can be within the same family to create a subtle effect, or more contrast can be created with dark and light. It all depends on the desired effect. We saw a lot of this in Schwarzkopf Professional's "Modern Times" collection at the beginning of the year.

Color Contrast is a technique I created. I typically use it on lighter shades, though it can be adapted to a variety of different hair shades. In this technique, lighter shades are placed on mid-lengths and ends (usually one or the other) and seldom taken down to the roots. Darker shades can be placed at scalp and ends only, leaving out the mid-lengths. This creates the effect of shading and density in the hair. It's completely wearable and very striking.

Both techniques yield beautiful results and are very simple to maintain.

The most important thing is to ask your stylist for advice. They usually can usually recommend new and creative ideas. Then, of course, after your color service, product is very important. Products like Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Colour Save Shampoo and Conditioner are important to the longevity of your hair color.
Summer Color Tip: If you're planning to spend a lot of time in the sun, the Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Sun Protect range is a must!
